After finishing Nights in Rodanthe this morning, all I can say is wow.

   Adrienne, a woman of 45 years old, encountered her love, which seem quite ridiculous in China. Only movie stars, singers or other celebrities dared to wait for their true love. As common people, most of us can’t imagine what kind of life it would be if a middle-age woman got divorced and brought up three children. What was worse, her father was badly ill and plenty of medical fee needed to pay for. However, Adrienne was tough enough to get though. Despite all that had happened in the years that had passed since then, Adrienne still held tight to the belief that love was the essence of a full and wonderful life. I was deeply touched by her optimistic attitude towards life.

    The book didn’t mention Paul even a word until Adrianne realized that she should talked to her daughter Amanda after she lost her beloved husband Brent. Before that, Amanda didn’t go well with her mother because she thought that Adrienne’s divorce with Jack somehow made her lost her Dad. Furthermore, she kept the opinion that her mother didn’t really understand her grief. Adrienne tried hard to comfort Amanda, but it didn’t work. At that time, the idea that telling the story between Paul and herself might help her occurred to her mind. And finally it turned out to be right.  

     Adrianne’s friend Jean asked her to help take care of the business for the Rodanthe’s inn. She encountered Paul just near the railing on the back porch of the inn. Paul happened to see her crying over there and thought she was kind of charming and beautiful. When he checked in, he was delight to see her again and she advised him to live in the blue room. In the following days, with frequent communication, they got along with each other quite well. Paul was a famous doctor and a workaholic before he divorced with his wife. And his relationship with his son was really bad because he put all his heart to work and ignored his wife and son for a long time. He sold his big house and luxurious car when he made his mind to leave for Ecuador to make up something with his son. At the same time, he was involved in a medical negligence. In the end, it turned out that he was innocent. The woman died in a plastic surgery because she was seriously ill before not because of Paul’s fault. The woman’s husband wrote to him and wanted to talk to Paul in Rodanthe. Though it seemed dangerous for Paul, he still agreed with the husband. So, Paul came to Rodanthe and had a chance to know Adrienne.  

      With knowing each other day by day, Paul and Adrienne fell in love with each other and they spent several days together happily. Nicholas Sparks, the author described their love in a fantasy way. Seeing their dialogue, I really forgot they were in their middle age. They just like young man and woman. One thing in different was that they knew their own heart after living through these bitter years. Encountering each other, both of them considered it to be a real fantasy. The past wasn’t merely a garden of roses and sunshine; the past held its share of heart break as well. Adrienne couldn’t deny that she struggled to the life when she lost her husband Jack. Jack divorced with her because of another woman they both knew, which make her doubted herself for a long time. Paul was gentle and considerate and handsome, she couldn’t help falling in love with him. For Paul, Adrienne was a charming woman and changed him a lot. He was selfish and cold before, now he was willing to change and be nice to life and to the people around. They were just meant to be each other.

     Adrienne and Paul were deeply in love. However, Paul couldn’t stay for a long time though he really didn’t want to leave; he needed to go to Ecuador to improve the relationship with his son. This also meant much to him. He put himself into a dilemma that whether to stay or to leave. Adrienne also wanted him to be together with her, but she knew that Mark as the son of Paul was important to him. She persuaded Paul to go to Ecuador. After Paul’s leaving, Adrienne left Rodanthe and backed to home. Part of her hoped Paul would come back and they wrote to each other from time to time to express their missing and love. The life was quite hard in Ecuador, Paul didn’t care and he found the meaning of it there. The relationship with his son just improved a bit, but God didn’t give more to him. Paul died in an accident to save his son.  

   Adrienne was shocked and in anguish at the news of Paul’s death. She just got a hope that she would have her love in the rest of her life and she was waiting for Paul. How could the fate turn out like this? She took time to forget the grief and put Paul into her heart. She thought that she would live with Paul’s love forever. Maybe in our opinion, they just got along several days and how could they loved each other so deeply. To tell you the truth, I believe that this romance story not only happens to a novel but also can happen to our life as long as we hold the beautiful belief and have the patience to wait.
